It is unlikely that any previous Budget statement has been more heavily trailed than was this one. When Gordon Brown was Prime Minister and Alistair Darling the Chancellor, haggling o0.6 the Budget measures could continue until a few hours before the statement to Parliament.

HSBC today announced that it is set to join the government's apprenticeship scheme which will initially provide nationally recognised qualifications to around 1,000 of its employees. The government is actively encouraging financial and professional services firms to set up such schemes.
